To help us measure our environmental impact we engaged the expert team at Greenly and their carbon accounting platform which helps to analyse our carbon emissions. Their service has proved highly valuable to us in understanding our environmental impact, which we can break down into the various functions of the business in our drive in making precision engineering sustainable.
Our Carbon Emissions: The Results
Our first audit was completed in 2023, analysing our carbon emissions for 2022. By using the Greenly platform we were able to determine our output was 6.15Kt of CO2-eq. This total number was mainly generated within our production processes and equalled 42.2t per member of staff. The number put Bowmill in Band D and gave us an incentive to aim for a measurable improvement in the future.
For our second audit, in 2024, which looked at our carbon emissions for 2023, we decided to continue with our partnership with Greenly. The score for the year came to 3.2Kt, which is major improvement on the previous year.
Improving Reporting Accuracy
Significantly, the audit for 2023 moved from being a financial analysis to a mainly activity-based evaluation. Taking this approach to measuring our emissions provides us with more accurate and meaningful data. We were able to do this by involving our supply chain partners, who also recognise the importance of understand the impact of our work throughout the value chain.
With the analysis complete, Greenly determined Bowmill is now a member of their Silver category. This is a recognition of the efforts made by Bowmill to reduce the impact the business has on the planet. We will achieve this by following our decarbonisation strategy, implementing action plans, and working with our partners to help them also follow our aims.
Working Towards Sustainable Precision Engineering
Looking ahead, Bowmill is evaluating the potential installation of solar arrays. These would be placed on the roofs of our facilities to provide renewable energy for our production processes and office functions. This is another step forwards in our drive to further cut our carbon emissions. With support from Greenly, we are focused on making precision engineering sustainable, providing our services with a minimal impact on the environment and becoming an active leader in value chains to minimise our impact on the planet.
