Defence High Pressure Components Project
In 2020 Bowmill, working in partnership with a major prime defence control systems provider, were awarded a package of multiple parts within a strategic work transfer.
Services
Overview
In order to accommodate this award Bowmill invested in a new assembly area along with new, enhanced equipment within the existing pressure testing facility.
This operational expansion brought the assembly capability within Bowmill up to 4 individual build areas, and a pressure testing service which could use Hydraulic oil, skydrol and high-pressure water.
Process
The new contract award would entail a high volume of components being processed. To handle the increased quantities, multi-pallet 5 axis machines were introduced.
These machines were best placed to provide high levels of efficiency in the production process, bring capable of optimising methods of machining complex parts to minimal operations.
- 10,000
- Pressure testing up to 10,000psi
- 100’s
- 100’s of components made each month
- 8
- 8 part variations manufactured
Result
In the first 6 months the new products required in this award, along with the new processes they entailed , were fully productionised.
Supply was undertaken to drum beat deliveries, using Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA) techniques, including gathering historical information in a collaborative approach with the customer. This ensured lessons learnt were applied and a Right First Time manufacture objective achieved.
