Overview
Alongside the A320neo it is set to become one of the best-selling long-range airliners ever made, setting new standards in fuel economy and passenger comfort.
As part of the evolution of the A321XLR, Bowmill were awarded by Airbus supplier Safran a package of first flight test manufacture of components to be used by the re-design. This included of both new design products and modified existing components.
The award would utilise a cross-section of the facilities and expertise provided by Bowmill to aviation partners, including:
- Solid Model conversion
- Engineering and producibility feasibility
- Quality configuration, using Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
- Project and Production planning
- New Product Introduction (NPI) and manufacturing management
Process
A total of 28 prismatic, cylinder and assembled items were required, with the customer setting short lead times for their delivery.
During an intensive 8-months, Bowmill completed all tasks and delivered the XLR prototype components to multiple global sites ahead of deadlines, exceeding expectations set by the customer.
